About the Public Theater of Minnesota
Our Mission

It is the mission of The Public Theater of Minnesota to strengthen our community by activating the imagination and creativity found in all people. We will inspire curiosity, discovery, and civic connectedness through the power of sharing thoughtful and inspiring stories.

Three Companies Working Together...

The Stage Company
This is the professional company of Public Theater of Minnesota.  Classics and new plays, comedies and dramas.  It's great theater in your own neighborhood.  The Stage Company will provide mentorship, educational programs and a collegial and supportive environment for the other companies that comprise the Public Theater of Minnesota

The Community Company
Open to artists of all ages and backgrounds.  This is an opportunity to join with friends, neighbors and professionals, working on stage and off, to create theater your family will love.  (And that we hope will inspire your artist within.)

The New Artist Company
Theater for artists ages 15-25.  Traditional plays, new performance types, film, music, dance...a place for emerging artists to have a voice and take a risk.

...United By a Commitment to Learning...

The Learning Department
The hub for all of the companies. Learning will include a range of activities from traditional classes for teens and adults to specialized workshops for community groups to focused reading and discussion groups. The Learning Department will collaborate with schools, community groups, and faith communities to provide special resources ranging from a guest speaker to a full residence program producing a school play. The Learning Department will create multiple entry points for audience members and organizations to participate in the work of Public Theater.

...Using Resources Wisely in Service to our Community.

Community Based Programming
Theater is not a building and creativity is not found solely in a studio or arts classroom. Public Theater of Minnesota is committed to making theater where people live. Our first production was at a high school-a tradition we plan to continue. This summer we are setting up shop in a public park. We hop to make theater accessible and part of the neighborhoods-as close by as a school, park, or community center. We will join with existing organizations in the community to strengthen their programs, support their mission, and share our resources.

Our Core Values

Excellence and Commitment to "Rehearsal"
In all things we will nuture excellence and apply the artistic discipline of rehearsal to continually develop our skills and knowledge.

Art is Essential
Gathering together to create and share stories is a vital part of how we establish, grow, and maintain the health of our families and community. Arts experiences are a necessary element of positive human development.

Life-Long Participation
We want all who come in to contact with us to become life-long friends and participate in the creative life of the Public Theater of Minnesota.

Responsible Stewardship
We are committed to sustainable financial and organizational support. We believe that we need to continually evaluate the resources at hand and re-imagine how they can deliver greater results for our participants and partners, and deepen support for life-long learning.
